Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound uses low frequency/longwave ultrasound therapy to promote muscular, joint, tendinous and bone healing. Through the use of 6 different hand probes, therapeutic ultrasound therapy works through the combination of 3 effects: diathermy, intense acoustic effects, and mechanical vibration. Diathermy (deep heat) and mechanical vibration work by increasing cellular metabolic and enzymatic activity resulting in increased microcirculation and oxygenation of the tissues. The acoustic effects work very similarly to shockwave as it effectively treats calcific pathologies but is painless and does not require sedation. This treatment modality is routinely used for human and small animal musculoskeletal disease and is continuing to be explored in equids.
