Alpha 2 Macroglobulin

VEI is now offering the newest therapy available for equine arthritis: alpha 2 macroglobulin (A2M). A2M is an enzyme found naturally in the horse’s blood and acts to inhibit cartilage breakdown. Inflamed or traumatized joints have a low number of the enzyme and are at risk of further joint deterioration from destructive enzymes. Studies in rats and humans have demonstrated that A2M injected directly into unhealthy joints helps counteract secondary cartilage breakdown.  A2M injections can be performed at the clinic in an outpatient procedure that involves spinning and filtering of the horse’s blood. Contact us today to determine whether your horse would be a good candidate.
