Stem Cells
Stem cells are on the cutting edge of regenerative therapy in equine sports medicine. These cells have the ability to differentiate into most tissue types and allow injured tissue to heal with strong and appropriate tissue by limiting scar tissue formation. At Virginia Equine Imaging, we utilize stem cells collected from bone marrow and dental pulp. Bone marrow derived stem cells are cultured from your horse’s sternum at the Equine Medical Center in Leesburg and returned in 4 weeks for injection. Dental pulp stem cells are retrieved from fetal tissue and are shipped for injection within 48 hours. Commonly treated injuries include suspensory ligament desmitis, superficial digital flexor tendonitis, meniscal injuries of the stifle, and bone cysts.
